BY DEBRA CASSENS WEISS A federal judge in New York City has ordered two lawyers and their law firm to show cause why they shouldn’t be sanctioned for submitting a brief with citations to fake cases, thanks to research by ChatGPT. Senior U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel of the Southern District of New York said in a May 4 order the firm’s legal filing was “replete with citations to nonexistent cases.

The Illinois Supreme Court has adopted a new rule that establishes guidelines for the state’s courts to use “parenting coordinators” to resolve minor issues that are causing conflict in family law cases. The rule went into effect immediately, on May 24, 2023. Rule 909 provides a framework that allows each judicial circuit, if it chooses, to adopt local rules “for the conduct of parenting coordination” that are consistent with Rule 909.
