It is fitting that Las Vegas is a major mecca of gambling, given that, next week, several hundred people will take a gamble on their safety to attend the physical portion of the first-ever hybrid ILTACON, the annual conference of the International Legal Technology Association. While I’d planned to be among them, I have decided to hedge my bets and attend virtually.

U.S. law firms have made little progress towards achieving greater diversity, with only minimal gains over the last seven years, according to a new analysis by Law360 Pulse. The Diversity Snapshot 2021 shows that, from 2019 to 2020, diversity numbers barely crept up, with minorities representing just over 18% of attorneys and 10% of partners, virtually the same as the prior year.

On 1 July 2021, [1] Federal Law No. 236-FZ on the Internet Activities of Foreign Entities in the Russian Federation (the “Law”) [2] came into force, requiring establishment of local presence, such as a branch, a representative office, or a subsidiary, for foreign Internet companies whose activities are focused on Russian users. The Law supplements the personal data localisation requirements under the Personal Data Law, [3] in effect since 1 September 2015.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this week took the rare step of penalizing a company for its allegedly poor disclosure of a cyber incident. The SEC announced a $1 million civil penalty against Pearson plc (“Pearson”), a London-based educational publishing company that is a U.S. securities issuer. The penalty resolves charges that Pearson misled investors related to a 2018 data breach.

Last Friday, I reported that a major exhibitor, iManage, facing mounting fears around the surge in the Delta variant of the coronavirus, had decided to pull its staff from attending ILTACON, while continuing to support the conference virtually. Now, it appears that another major vendor has pulled its staff. A customer of Litera has confirmed receiving an email from a Litera employee cancelling a meeting scheduled for Las Vegas because Litera had decided to pull out of attending in person.
