I have been working on blog posts about subjects I have written about long ago. I probably even wrote about the subject more than one time. I have been writing about legal blogging for twenty years. Seeing that I was starting a blog on legal blogging back in 2003, Ernest Svenson, who was publishing the blog, Ernie the Attorney , sent me a nice email saying cool idea, but what was I going to blog about the next week.

I continue to maintain my census of U.S. cases referencing emojis or emoticons. In 2023, I logged 225 such cases (this number will grow a bit due to lags with the electronic databases). The case count continues to grow exponentially. The 2023 count represented a 17% increase over the 2022 count. 2023 marked a significant milestone: my census now counts over 1,000 total U.S. cases referencing emojis and emoticons (the exact number is 1,017).

In December 2023, the Dutch SA fined a credit card company €150,000 for failure to perform a proper data protection impact assessment (“DPIA”) in accordance with Art. 35 GDPR for its “identification and verification process”. On January 16, 2024, the Belgian Supervisory Authority sanctioned a data broker for violating several provisions of the GDPR. In particular, the data broker processed personal data without an appropriate legal basis and in violation of its transparency obligation. The more than 100-page decision explains that until July 2021 the data broker collected personal data from different sources and sold the data to interested third parties (“data delivery services”).
