Law Professor's Advice To Avoid Another ChatGPT Fiasco: Always Check Your Work

This advice seems to have been forgotten in the embarrassing case that went viral.

This isn’t really a new problem; lawyers have offloaded or delegated work for years. You have to make sure if it’s work done by a non-lawyer, by someone who’s not licensed in the jurisdiction, that the work is competently done, and you have to own it.

— Professor Bruce Green of Fordham Law School, in comments given to Bloomberg Law on the ChatGPT court-filing blunder that went viral over Memorial Day weekend. The lawyers involved will appear in court on June 8 as they attempt to avoid sanctions for their over-reliance on the generative AI program, which produced more than a handful of nonexistent cases that they cited to in their brief.
